Massa Museum in Lillafüred, Miskolc

Massa Museum in Lillafüred, Miskolc

The Massa Museum is dedicated to a hundred-year history of iron processing in Hamor and the activities of the Fazola family, which played an important role in Miskolc at a time when mining and processing of iron ore had just begun.

Exposition of the Massa Museum

In the museum a collection of relics, historical and engineering documents and elements of intellectual heritage are waiting for curious visitors. Here you can significantly expand your knowledge of the Hungarian and Slovak iron culture, see it with your own eyes, in what conditions and with what tools the craftsmen worked.

Near the building of the museum stands the "Fazola-smithy", one of the most important industrial monuments of Hungary. The neighborhood of the only that well preserved blast furnace in Hungary is the popular pedestrian zone, in which there is a Lillafüred forest station.

Often you can hear the blows of a large hammer near the smithy with a water wheel, which is just a few steps from the stove. Visitors can try to work with tools and see the everyday life of the smiths of the past. The open-air metallurgical and mining machinery museum, located on the other side of Granada, also attracts visitors. These large devices are memorials of the Diosgyor period, a reminder of the spirit and love for the work of people who used them before the production of iron stopped.

How to get there

The museum is located in the area of Lillafüred, which is easily accessible by rail (a tourist narrow-gauge railway, the main station of which is located near the famous Hamori lake and the Palota castle hotel) or by bus from other parts of the city. Within walking distance of the museum, along the narrow-gauge railway line, you can have very tasty lunch at the Trout Breeding Farm.

Opening hours: the museum is open from May to October only on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 10:00 to 16:00.
