Ancient Furnace, Miskolc

Ancient Furnace, Miskolc

The blast furnace of Miskolc is located in one of the most beautiful areas of the city – Lillafüred. This is one of three such industrial facilities, that are well preserved in Europe. The furnace is located near the famous Hamori Lake, and near the stop of another attraction of Miskolc – the operating narrow-gauge railway. It is worth noting that the blast furnace itself is also in working order.

History of the Ancient furnace

The history of the construction of a blast furnace dates back to the 18th century. Henrik Fazola, one of the first industrial entrepreneurs in Hungary, built a blast furnace in Miskolc in the 1760s. The permission for construction was given by Empress Maria Theresa herself, having allocated a wide territory in the forests of the city of Miskolc for this purpose.

In 1813, Henrik Fazola's son began work on improving the blast furnace, and a reservoir for blast furnace work, now known as Hamori Lake, also appeared. A plant for working with iron was also opened. In 1867, active production began, later iron smelting was transferred to the Diosgyor district. In subsequent years, the need for a blast furnace fell gradually. Restoration, carried out in the 20th century, allowed to partially restore the blast furnace in its original dimensions.

Furnace today

Today, the blast furnace of Miskolc tells the age-old history of steelmaking in the city. Near the oven there is a small restored workshop and a water wheel, as well as the Massa Museum.

In September of each year near the blast furnace there is a festival, the purpose of which is to present the historical and industrial values of the region. They burn up the furnace, conduct various performances, prepare street food and much more.

How to get there

The blast furnace is next to the Massa Museum. You can get here using the historic narrow-gauge railway in Lillafüred, also by bus number 15 or by car from Miskolc and Eger, going in the direction of the Hamori lake.
