Museum Library at Miskolc University, Miskolc
Museum Library Selmeci at Miskolc University is a place for true connoisseurs of antiquity. Here you can see unique copies of books published in the beginning of the 16th century. The library is the heir to the old book depository of the Institute of Mining, founded in 1735, and later it became the Academy of Mining and Forestry. The university was the first institution of technical higher education in the world. After it, there were two "successors" – the University of Miskolc and the University of Western Hungary.
Selmeci Library is the only technical and natural science library in Europe, which remained intact, almost in complete and original state from the 18th century.
Exhibits of the museum
The library contains a significant collection of mining and metallurgical literature dating from the 16th and 19th centuries, which helped to maintain a high level of education and research at the Academy. Three quarters of the collection – 45,000 copies collected between 1735 and 1918, was moved to Miskolc. Almost six and a half thousand items can be seen in the hall of the museum, in the same library order as in the Academy in 1862.
