Avas Mountain, Miskolc
In Miskolc, besides other interesting places, there is Avas Mountain. It is a hill of volcanic origin, which is the highest point of the city. Since 1963 a television tower has been installed at its top. From its observation deck, you can observe luxurious views of Miskolc, and the entrance is free for everyone. At the very top floor the entrance is closed. Once, there was a restaurant here.
At the foot of the mountain there is the Calvinist church and the bell tower of the 16th century. The ancient wine cellars of Avas Hill have great historical value, tastings are often held here.
Interesting facts
The name of the mountain comes from the ancient Hungarian word, which means "forbidden". In the old days shepherds were forbidden to graze animals on the mountain, in order not to damage the old wine cellars. In the 20th century, important artifacts were discovered on the hill, indicating that once primitive people lived in caves.
Today wine cellars on Mount Avas are one of the attractions of Miskolc. There are many cafes and restaurants, which, among other things, conduct cellar excursions. For example, the restaurant Aranykorona.
How to get there
To Avas Mount in Miskolc, you can get on bus No. 21 or 21V to the stop Erzsébet tér. You will have to walk to the television tower or you can drive up by car. Near the tower there is a parking lot.
