History of Saint Stephen's Cave
The cave was discovered not so long ago, only at the beginning of the 20th century. Its first scientific description was made by the researcher Ottokár Kadić. It was Kadić who was the first to descend into the cave in 1913, using cable cars. The formation of cave tracks began in 1927, and it was not opened to the general public until August 1931.
Features of the stalactite cave
The tour inside the cave together with the guide lasts about half an hour. During this time, however, you can get very cold, since the average temperature does not exceed 10 degrees. Therefore it is necessary to take warm clothes with you. In addition, in the cave you can and even need to stay longer, because it is considered curative because of clean air.
Earlier, the cave of St. Stephen was under the directive of the Bükk National Park and was used exclusively as a tourist site. And only in the 80-ies it was possible to determine that the air in it has a positive effect on the human body. Since 1991, there has been a therapeutic treatment of respiratory and asthma diseases. However, it is worth considering that in order to get the course of therapy you should get the note from the specialist.
What can you see in the cave
From the first minutes of your stay in the cave, you will see bizarre stalactite formations. The largest can be seen in the dome – it is a Frozen waterfall, which covers the entire wall, with an area of almost 400 square meters, from the ceiling to the floor.
How to get there
The Stalactite Saint Stephen's Cave is in Lillafüred, 3.5 kilometers from the center of Miskolc. From Diosgyor there is a bus number 5. Before Diosgyor there is a tram number 1.
Opening hours: excursions are held every day, in the morning, depending on the season:
- in the summer season (April 1 – September 30) – daily from 9:00 to 17:00;
- in the winter season (October 1 – March 31) – every day from 9:00 to 14:00.
