Szeleta Cave in Lillafüred, Miskolc

Szeleta Cave in Lillafüred, Miskolc

The first cave excavations began in Hungary from the Szeleta Cave, in the northeast of Lillafüred, and thanks to the original samples of dishes and weapons, a new name for prehistoric culture arose, Szeleta.

History of the Szeleta Cave

Excavations in the cave began in 1906, thanks to the researchers Otto Herman and Ottokar Kadić. They found ancient tools that our ancestors could use in the Ice Age. They also managed to find the remains of the bones of cave bears and the likeness of a primitive furnace.

By 1947, the number of excavation sites had increased to ten. On their basis, they were able to determine a unique technology for manufacturing labor, which in their form resembles a bay leaf. Since 1953 this culture officially received the name of Szeleta.

What can you see

The cave of Szeleta is located on the top of the mountain, at an altitude of 96 meters above sea level. Its length is 20 meters, width – 15 meters, and height – 8 meters. To the left of the entrance corridor, the road leads directly to a long 40-meter wide corridor, and then to a narrow 30-meter inclined branch, where small and large cabins open.

In the cave there is a memorial plaque dedicated to the famous Hungarian zoologist and ethnographer Otto Herman. On the side wall, at a height of several meters, you can see a black line indicating where the level of filling was at the beginning of the study. The Szeleta Cave welcomes tourists at any time.

Not far from the entrance there is the cemetery of Hamora, where the grave of Otto Herman is located.

How to get there

It is not difficult to find the Szeleta cave. You should walk half an hour from Lillafüred train station following the road sign of the pedestrian route.
