Monument to Louis the Great, Miskolc
On the left, at the entrance to the castle of Diosgyor, visitors are greeted by a monument dedicated to the Hungarian King Louis the Great. Diosgyor was the residence and favorite place of the monarch, but very soon after his death it was destroyed. King Lajos, or Louis, was nicknamed "The Great" for his deeds for the good of the country and in fact he is considered to be the greatest ruler of Hungary. Among his achievements are:
- the foundation of the University of Pécs;
- entering the war with the Ottoman Empire among the first European rulers;
- during his reign (1342–1382) medieval Hungary occupied the first positions on the political map of Europe.
The monument near the castle appeared in 2001 thanks to the architect Eva Vargas. The bronze bust depicts the king as majestic and stern.
